Dancing With Your Dog

Have you ever heard about dancing with your dog? While it may seem like a strange idea, it can actually be a lot of fun. People even compete in canine freestyle competitions. If you want something active and fun to do with your dog, you should definitely consider dancing with your dog.

Learn Some Dance Moves

DancingIf your dog has some basic training, then you can teach it to dance. If your dog cannot sit or stay or does not listen to you, you should focus on perfecting these skills first before asking your dog to do anything more complex.

Once you have the basic training squared away, you can start teaching your dog some moves. For example, you can teach your dog to go in a circle around you. First, you want to have your dog standing in front of you. Then you want to hold a treat out at nose level and move it slowly, switching hands, around your body. Your dog should follow the treat until it is standing in front of you once again. While the dog is making the circle, say “circle” or whatever you want to use in conjunction with this move.

If you want your dog to spin around on its own, you can teach this trick as well. All you have to do is have your dog sit or stand in front of you and coax it to spin around in a circle with a treat. Take the treat and hold it in front of your dog’s nose. Move it slowly in a circle behind the dog so that your dog follows it around in a circle. As the dog is moving, you want to say the command that you want your dog to associate with this trick, such as “circle” or “spin.” Be sure to give your dog lots of treats and praise when it completes the trick.

Once you have picked your moves, you have to practice, practice, practice. Dogs learn by repetition, and you will need to repeat these tricks over and over again. Whether you decide you want to compete or not, dancing with your dog can be an enjoyable activity that you both love!
